Lower Umpires Application

If you are interested in umpiring Pinto and Shetland games for Spring 2024, please fill out the below form.

Eligibility is limited to current Westhills Baseball players in Pony or Colt division, and Westhills Baseball alumni currently on their high school baseball team.

If your application is approved, you will receive emails linking you to the Sign Up Genius page for games in due time prior to the games.

Compensation is $25 per Pinto game and $20 per umpire for Shetland. In addition, each umpire is entitled to one main food item (breakfast, hamburger, hot dog, etc.) and a drink for free from the Snack Shack.

TRAINING

All umpires: Review and become an expert on all the material below. If you have any questions, contact the Director of Lower Umpires at jrumps@westhillsbaseball.org.

PROFESSIONALISM: When you are umpiring a game, remember you are acting as an official of Westhills Baseball. Utmost professionalism and decorum are expected. Do not bring food with you on the field, don't look at your phone (even between innings), and do keep your attention on the game, managers, and players at all times. Make sure all your actions reflect well on you and Westhills Baseball.

RAIN GUIDANCE: In wet weather, once the game starts, continue playing unless the bases get slippery or mud gets clumped in players' cleats. Once you observe this, call the game for rain.

Uniform and Equipement

Uniform is your official Westhills Baseball Jr. Umpires cap (black); a Westhills Baseball umpire shirt (sky blue); black, navy, or gray slacks or black jeans (no blue jeans or shorts); and black or white athletic shoes. Black slacks and shoes are preferred. If you don't have a shirt or cap, pick one up when you check in at the Snack Shack. In case none are available, wear the practice jersey for your current team and your spring Westhills Baseball team cap.

A ball/strike counter is part of your uniform whether doing bases or home. If you do home, also bring a plate brush and ball bag. These are not supplied by the league, but may be easily acquired from sports retailers.
